SCOTTISH LATOK III EXPEDITION 1999.

Material type: TextTextPublication details: [Manchester] ; The Expedition ; 2000 Description: 24p., illus., map. 30cmDDC classification: 623 Online resources: Full text available here Summary: 19 June 1999 - 9 August 1999 this expedition aimed to attempt the unclimbed and untried North Spur o f Latok III (6949m) from the Choktoi glacier in the central Karakoram, Northern Pakistan. The unexpected steepness and unhelpful lower rock faces made an Alpine style attempt unlikely and considerable aid necessary. This combined with frequent serac collapses and snow avalanches on the lower slopes and approach to the mountain meant that the attempt was abandoned. The expedition therefore turned itself to other objectives. The first ascent of Hanipispur South (6047m) via the North ridge was achieved. An ascent was made o f the North West ridge o f Biacherahi Tower (5800m). Members also put up a steep route on the west wall o f the Doug Scott Spur, which was also climbed to the summit. Other multi pitch rock routes were created on subsidiary ridges o f Latok III and Choktoi (Trident) Peak (6166).
